First win of the new year

Llangollen got 2016 off to a winning start with a tight 8-12 win in their local derby with Rhos. In a tight and tense game dominated by the conditions both teams struggled for possession and territory so much so that at half time Rhos had sneaked ahead 3-0. Some stern words from coach Mark Price at half time saw LLan come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and 10 mins in the forwards piled on the pressure and prop Arran Davies crashed over from short range to put the Tower field men in the lead. Skipper Iestyn Hughes added the conversion. LLan kept up the pressure but resolute Rhos defending kept them out. Eventually a series of penalties and scrums saw the LLan pack assert themselves on the home side pack and allowed scrum half Mike Powell to go over. Hughes missed with the conversion. With 10 mins to go it looked like the away side would cruise home, but Rhos were not about to roll over and launched a series of attacks which eventually they converted into a try in the corner. Luckily for LLan  the conversion attempt hit the post and they were able to see out the closing minutes to take the points. Coach Mark Price added "we were so rusty in the first half but second half we came to life and the pack took the game to them allowing the backs to run a bit more freely. Hopefully we can take the second half performance into next week's game at home to Benllech".
