Still Un-beaten

Llangollen travelled to Welshpool on Saturday looking to extend their un-beaten league run but they knew it was going to be a tough task with Welshpool always putting up a stern test. The first half was pretty much one way traffic with LLan dominating up front and setting a good platform for the backs to attack. This possession and territory was rewarded when centre James Claybrook sliced through the Welshpool defence and crossed for the first score. Outside half Roger Chadwick missed with the conversion but LLan looked good for their lead. The play continued in the same vein as LLan looked to improve on their lead, good work from the pack in the loose saw them making yards with ease and with Chadwick marshalling things from 10 it wasn't long before hooker Jack Wilson crashed over from close range for LLan's second try. Again Chadwick missed the conversion. LLan continued their strangle hold on the Welshpool half looking to increase their lead. They were soon rewarded with a penalty and Chadwick slotted to see the Tower Field men take a 13-0 lead. With a few minutes before half time LLan went in search of another score but try as they may they couldn't breech the strong Welshpool defence. The second half started in similar vein with LLan looking to add to their lead and with the introduction of Owain Brown into the centre it was some good phase play that lead to fullback Josh Wilson crossing the line to increase the LLan lead. Claybrook missed the conversion. LLan continued to build through the phases and again it was Wilson who capitalised and crossed the line, Claybrook missed the conversion but LLan had their fourth try and a 23-0 lead. This was the cue for Welshpool to kick start a come back, with the bit between their teeth they began surging up the field pressurising LLan and poor LLan discipline were allowing them penalties. When LLan had Adam Thomas sent to the bin Welshpool capitalised and crossed the line, the conversion as successful. The sides then wrestled for possession and territory with the Welshpool forwards making in roads into the LLan defence and were rewarded again crossing the line after some good play. The conversion was missed but Welshpool could sense something and when centre Brown joined Thomas in the bin they looked to get back into the game. LLan battled hard and got some territory and when they were awarded penalty Claybrook converted and increased the LLan lead. With minutes left on the clock Welshpool surged up field and were rewarded for their hard work crossing the line and getting within a converted try with the conversion un-successful. With the seconds ticking away LLan held onto the ball and made the game safe taking the bonus point win and Welshpool taking a deserved losing bonus point.
Coach Mark Price added "first half we had total dominance but we bombed a couple of chances, we spoke at half time and that 10-20 mins of the second half we played great rugby and got the bonus point with the other  two tries. The last 20 we want to forget about we relaxed and our discipline was shocking and fair play to Welshpool they came back at us! But we got the bonus point win".
